Our History

Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc. was founded on April 3, 2005, by the mother-daughter team of Imani Canty and Dr. Althia F. Ali.
The idea for the sorority was Imani's. She wanted to have a sorority experience, but found that she was uncomfortable in the existing sororities because they clashed with her religious beliefs and practices. Gamma Gamma Chi was incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia on July 21, 2005.
The sorority was founded to promote a positive image for Muslim women and Islam in general. The founders had a strong desire to unify collegiate and professional Muslimahs by promoting Islam through Sisterhood, Scholarship, Leadership and Community Service.
The Board of Directors held their first meeting in November 2005 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Members of the Board of Directors comprise the National Grand Chapter, which is reserved for members of the Board and honorary members.

In 2025, during the celebration of the sorority's 20th anniversary in Charlotte, North Carolina, a new chapter-Chi Chapter-was founded as a result of a group of nine dedicated sorors who returned to re-establish the sorority in 2023. The sorority was incorporated in North Carolina on February 28, 2025. The Chi Chapter serves as the governing board of the sorority and is responsible for all operations.
