FAQ's

Thank you for your interest in Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc. We are an organization of college-educated women who are interested in promoting Islam through Sisterhood, Scholarship, Leadership and Community Service.   As a result of the high volume of inquiries that we receive about Gamma Gamma Chi, this list of FAQs is provided to answer many of your questions.

We hope that your question(s) are answered here; however, if you have further questions about us please contact us.

Q #1: How do I become a member of Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc.?

A: Gamma Gamma Chi is committed to high academic standards for membership, and expects each of its members currently enrolled at colleges and universities to exemplify that commitment through classroom attendance and performance. The philosophy for attaining high academic achievement was established by our founders.

For membership in the sorority, women must have completed a college degree or be pursuing work leading to at least a baccalaureate degree. Students are eligible for membership after they have completed one semester at an accredited college or university. A cumulative minimum grade point average of 3.2 on a 5.0 grading scale, 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale, or a 1.5 on a 3.0 grading scale is required for acceptance as an incoming member. Membership is open to Muslim women and non-Muslim women who support our mission and successfully complete all phases of   the intake process.

Other requirements are explained in detail during the Gold Presentation and Probationary Period which occur after you have submitted the necessary documentation that allows you to attend.

Once we have sufficient interest in a given location (usually at least 15 membership inquiry completed forms), we will host a meeting known as the Gold Presentation, where prospective sorors receive information about the   sorority and learn how to become a member, inshaAllah.

Once you have completed the membership inquiry form, you can expect to receive follow up communications as you proceed through the process if we find that our initial review requirements are met.  Subsequently, we extend an invitation to attend a Gold Presentation. All persons interested in becoming a member of Gamma Gamma Chi must attend this official membership interest activity.

Q #2: I graduated from college a number of years ago; can I still apply to become a member?

A: Yes. To be considered, we need to receive a copy of the transcript or diploma showing that the degree was awarded. Also we will need to receive other required documentation that will be identified for you as the process continues.

Q #3: If I meet all requirements specified at the Gold Presentation do I automatically become a member of Gamma Gamma Chi?

A: Membership is granted after careful review and is not automatic.    Our goal is to select women who not only meet the basic requirements, but also can uphold the standards of Gamma Gamma Chi as well as commit to participating in our programs and activities.

Gammas are interested in establishing and continuing the tradition of excellence in all aspects. Therefore, we invite all women to apply who exhibit excellent personal and professional character and high moral standards, and who have a commitment to service to the community. The final determinant in whether you are selected for membership is a combination of factors that strengthen you and the organization. The intake process gives us the opportunity to evaluate the match between you and the sorority.

Q #4: Is there an age limit to join?

A: Gamma Gamma Chi does not have an age limit for membership as long as membership eligibility requirements are met.

Q #5: How is Gamma Gamma Chi different from other sororities?

A: We are different from other sororities in that we are a sisterhood whose practice is based on Islamic principles. This means that although we use Greek letters in name, we do not engage in doctrines that are traditionally associated with “Greek Life.”   We are Islamic based; therefore, we do not participate in any form of shirk or any other practices that conflict with Islamic principles. Our focus is to provide an alternative to traditional sororities that allows women to maintain and celebrate their Islamic identity in rewarding, meaningful, and fun ways within a sorority structure.

Q #6: Do you participate in Rush?

A: Although we do not have collegiate chapters, we plan to offer Rush activities that will allow collegiate women to participate in the exciting process that other sororities engage in. Islamic practices will provide the structure of all Rush activities, of course.

Q #7: Do you participate in rituals?

A: We adhere to activities that coincide with the Sunnah. We observe salat whose timing occurs during a meeting or an event as well as other important Islamic observances such as Eid celebrations, fasting and Itikaf in the month of Ramadan. There is a special induction ceremony involved in becoming a member.

Q #8: What are the benefits of joining Gamma Gamma Chi?

A: The benefits are numerous. We provide life skills like leadership development, encouragement and assistance to foster scholastic achievement, opportunities to serve our communities through philanthropic events, and lasting lifelong friendships. Most importantly we serve as a support system for women in our community. Membership in Gamma Gamma Chi is especially beneficial to those who desire to continue to practice the Deen of Islam.

Q #9: Does Gamma Gamma Chi have a "brother fraternity?”

A: Currently, we have no affiliations with fraternities.

Q #10. How Islamic is Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc.?

Being Islamic-based means that we will adhere to the Qur'an and Sunnah in all that we do. Being a sorority means that we have certain expectations and responsibilities that we plan to meet inshaAllah. The expectation is that we will have an organization that enables us to enjoy sisterhood, maintain scholarship and academic excellence among our sorors, to engage in activities that will help strengthen leadership skills, and to provide community service—particularly to the Muslim communities in which we live—through our chapter involvement. While we will not proselytize to non-Muslims, we will demonstrate ways to try to serve and please Allah (SWT) in all that we do. We see this as an excellent opportunity to give dawah, so they feel welcome to join us as long as they help advance the mission of promoting positive visibility of Muslim women and Islam in general.

Q #11.   I am a Shi'ia/Moor/other faith. Is Gamma Gamma Chi tolerant of my beliefs, and will I be able to follow my prayer timings and other requirements if I become a member?

The sorority is open to all women regardless of their faiths as long as they support the mission of the Sorority: To unify Muslim collegiate and professional women and to promote Islam.

Q #12. What's a legacy?

A legacy is a prospective member whose parent, grandparent, or sibling is an inducted member of Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc. Contrary to popular myths, being a legacy does not guarantee that a prospective member will be offered membership in the Sorority. Each person earns membership based on her own merits.

Q #13. What is the intake process?

The intake process is an educational period when a prospective member learns about the sorority, its history, goals and objectives, and values.   This time is critical for both the prospective member and existing members to determine whether there is a match.   Our intake process begins with the initial inquiry and continues through the probationary process that lasts no more than 21 days and ends with an induction ceremony when the prospective member (sometimes called a “pledge” in other sororities) becomes an official member of our sorority.   During the induction ceremony, new members receive the official sorority pin and Members Only information. The induction ceremony is private and can only be attended by full-fledged members.

Q #14. When can I wear my Greek letters and sorority crest?

During the intake process, you are allowed to wear specially designed clothing that bears the name Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc. or a derivative thereof (such as GGChi or Gamma). At this time, whenever the name is used it will be accompanied by the words Gamma Lily, indicating that you are in the intake process but not an inducted member. Wearing the sorority shield or sorority crest is reserved for members who have completed the induction ceremony.

Q #15. If I am a member of a Greek lettered organization already, may I join Gamma Gamma Chi?

We are unable to accept for membership an undergraduate who already belongs to another sorority. Graduates who have membership in another sorority are eligible to be considered; however, we hope that they will choose to discontinue membership in the other sorority in order to devote their time and attention to Gamma Gamma Chi.

Q #16.  Are you accepting new members?

We are enthusiastically accepting expressions of interest from prospective and inactive members. Start by completing a Membership Inquiry FormDo you feel that membership in Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc. is for you? >>Contact us.
